I noticed Eve will be holding democratic elections from May 5th, with the elected players liaising directly with the developers and hold in game discussion important to the community. This is heralded by Worlds-in-motion, a main Virtual World site, as a major and new cross over step between Virtual worlds and MMO games, an issue which I have been discussing for some time also. To me this is inevitable and has appeared in two developing MMORTS games already and no doubt more soon. Imagine how hard an individual player will have to pimp to gain ANY power or influence in such a venue, compared to the empires and assets that will be clashing in MMORTS games.
I will note at this point that Dark Sky Entertainment had announced and laid out plans for this exact system in September, and the degree and level of discussion left me in no doubt they had been discussing and planning this for some time before that. Compare this to this post and the Nov 2007 initiation timeline for Eve. Kudos DSE - think you won that one lol
Beyond protocol have the senate in plan, soon to be implemented in the closed BETA and tested out. This seems exactly the same as the Eve example, bar the actual dynamics involved. In Eve individual players will probably not benefit from active participation with so many vying for a place, whereas within MMORTS, there will be much more influence available down to the nature of the genre and game demands.
War will be an active part of politics, which imo makes it much more realistic of the democracy we see in real life. Joining an alliance will extend the power of an empire further and add in the very real dynamic of resource scarcity and I think the RPG element of Beyond protocol will be vibrant. A hope of mine is too see the senate etc interfaced like a virtual world and allow many the avatar aspect of gaming they have been conditioned to enjoy. i say conditioned as we are bred to really focus on personal attainment in gaming, especially RTS which is just getting used to cooperative play now technology can handle the numbers and activity.
Fragmented Galaxy is leaning towards a Developer run Sol System with admin tools manifesting as ingame assets, ie; effing big ships and planet killers possibly. Not an are they are focusing on atm so I will await more info before going into one. Suffice to say, the possibility of a coordinated attack on the Sol system is not ruled out and may serve as a uber game mission for all eventually.
Defacto War: Commander in Chief proceeds along this line with an interesting concept. Selling areas of the USA virtually and allowing players to develop communities and whatever according to their wish, the possibility of taking over the initial developer run US government is a stated game aim. success in this area would leave you with a federal/whatever government of your choice running and would then become the next main target of other players or even a developer counter-attack by outside forces maybe. Another one not fully explained yet but being worked on right now.
So all in all a lot of new innovations in this area coming, and with virtual world and micropayments, ingame advertising and instanced (atm just casual games) gaming within these worlds, the future looks very complex and busy for gamers. Less personal achievement will have to be swallowed in my opinion as the future type of game will involve huge amounts of cooperative play and collective achievments. Maybe this can change the world also lol.
